This list is not going to be easy. I’m not going to sugar coat it. I’m not going to tell you that there’s a miracle formula you can drink that can help you eat whatever you want. That just isn’t true. It’s simple, it’s supposed to be hard because it’s not supposed to be for everybody. With that said here are 10 foods, that in my opinion, you shouldn’t be eating (a lot of lol) when you’re trying to lose weight.
Cheese is one of those foods that is very heavy on your body. Because of its fatty nature, it is full of calories, and while delicious even eating a cup full of the stuff will add as many as 400 calories to your meals.
Alternative: A good alternative to cheese is… there isn’t any. Just eat less of it, maybe next time instead of adding ladles of cheese to your nachos, simply have a small cup of it on the side.
No doctor in the world ever said “hey, you know what you need more of in your diet? A pig’s fatty back.” Bacon is basically fried fat, which while delicious, is high in calories. So next time, maybe skip the bacon at breakfast and double up on the eggs
Alternative: My favorite alternative to bacon is turkey slices pan-fried without oil. Just put your pan on high and drop the pieces of turkey until they are nice and crispy. I kid you not it’s the closest thing to bacon you can have while trying to lose weight, plus it’s good for you.
3. Fast Food
For the first time in my life, I am living without fast food. I’ve completed eliminated it from my diet and I’ve never felt better, plus my wallet is definitely looking healthier too. It’s no surprise that a diet consisting of fast food is an unhealthy diet, but what a lot of us don’t realize is that it is also an expensive diet. Even eating only dollar-items starts to add up as you start to consume two, maybe three dollar-burgers, large fries, and a large drink. So next time skip the golden arc and cook your burgers in the comfort of your home. Stay healthy and start saving.
Alternative: My favorite alternative to any fast food burger is here. For anything else just be conscious about what you put in your body. If you’re craving a hot dog, use turkey dogs and whole grain buns. If you’re in the mood for a coffee, get a venti iced coffee with soy milk and three Splenda (make at home). Be smart and eat right.
4. Soft Drinks
If you’re like me, there is no better feeling than the crisp and cold flavor of a coke on a long hot day (especially in an ice cup filled to the rim with ice). Just thinking about it makes my mouth water, but nevertheless. There is not point in drinking your calories, especially through sugar-packed beverages. Remember even just one large drink can up to 300 calories or one cheeseburger. So next time instead of having a large coke, eat your meals with water, just doing this alone will definitely help you lose weight.
Alternative: In dire situations, my go to zero calorie drink is Coke Zero, but I try not to drink it too often. Something in it makes me feel bloated.
5. Ice Cream
Ice cream is a staple food for those long summer days. While it’s a refreshing treat to brighten your days because it’s milk based, it can add some serious calories to your daily budget, and that’s without adding delicious toppings!
Alternative: Your favorite flavor of frozen yogurt! Try any “Froyo” place around you and add as much fruit and nuts as you please, maybe even a tablespoon of gummy bears for good measure.
6. Steak (and really any other red meat)
Grilling was always a go-to option for me when I wanted to eat healthily. While grilling is one of the healthiest ways to cook your meals, it’s more about what you throw on the grill than the actual grilling that will make a difference. Steaks and other grilled red meats (hot dogs, ribs, etc) are filled with fats, which in my case caused me to go to the hospital not once, but three times. So next time, instead of wrapping that asparagus in bacon have it by itself, or just have bacon and stop kidding yourself.
Alternative: For me, I always prefer grill chicken over steaks. I also use ground chicken or turkey as oppose to ground beef for my burgers, meatloaf, and any other recipe that requires ground beef.
Milk chocolate is an awesome way to eat empty calories. While delicious, these hand size bars are nothing more than an easy way to get sugar into your body. I really, only eat them on Saturdays, right after my double digit bike rides.
Alternative: Peanut butter and small amounts of dark chocolate.
8. Potato Chips
Potato chips come in all shapes, sizes, and flavor but at the end of the day, they all share one thing in common: a high amount of fat and calories. Their fried nature makes it impossible to include them in your diet while you’re trying to lose weight.
Alternative: Baked pretzels or in very limited situations baked potato chips (be careful and don’t turn this into a habit).
Milk is the devil’s juice… lol, but for reals it is. I’ve convinced myself that as adult humans we are not meant to process the amount of fat found in milk (and most dairy products). Even 2% hits me like a truck, so I’ve dropped it in the past year and have never felt better.
Alternative: Almond Milk, plus remember that milk is for babies
I’m sorry guys, but there is no efficient way to lose weight, that involves binge drink every weekend. Losing weight is hard and it forces to make decisions and eliminate things you love for the greater good.
Thank you for reading guys. Until next time, ride safely.
