10 Weight Loss Mistakes You Should Avoid

Six months ago I started what would become my first fitness adventure. My mind changed, my body changed, and my life changed. The journey has been great, I’ve learned a lot and experienced much more. Today I want to focus on the mistakes I learned along the way, so that anyone who is just starting their own weight loss adventures, can skip them and get to their goals quicker. So without any more hesitation, here are 10 mistakes that you can avoid when you’re just starting your weight loss journey.

 

  1. Setting unrealistic goals

    Weight loss, like most goals, takes time and determination to accomplish. Setting high or unrealistic expectations makes it feel like you don’t know what you’re doing. Remember it didn’t take 1 day for you to gain weight, why would it take 1 day for you to lose weight. So instead of focusing on where you want to be tomorrow, focus on where you want to be in 1 year.

  2. Meal Prepping

    When you’re just starting your weight loss journey it’s impossible to know what your body’s needs are. If you don’t know what works for you (and what doesn’t) what good can meal prepping do for you. Meal prepping is a tool that if used properly can take your fitness goals to the next level, but it’s not a one size fits all.

  3. Only eating “salads”

     

    You’re not a rabbit, stop eating like one. While vegetables have their place in every meal plan, it is important for your diet to consists of more than just salads. Remember, it’s a well-balanced composition of foods that will make the difference in your life. You’re a human being, don’t stop being “human” because you want to be fit. Instead, just make better decisions when choosing what you’ll put in your body next.

  4. Drinking diet drinks

    With the sodium level of most diet drinks, it is important to limit their consumption. While it’s okay to have 1 or 2 of them per week, remember that the overconsumption of diet drinks will have you feeling bloated. Stick to water and watch the pounds just melt off.

  5. Having no cheat meals

     

     

    You’re not a robot. Live a little.

  6. Only focusing on working out

    In weight loss, working out is just half of the equation. Remember, it’s always easier to eat fewer calories than to burn off the ones you consume.

  7. Not tracking calories

    How could anyone know what their body needs to lose weight if they don’t track what they put in their body? Tracking your calories gives you a road map to follow. Technology has made it possible to track your calories from wherever you are. Take advantage of the many apps available!

  8. Drinking alcohol

     

    It sucks, but sadly it’s true. In order to make the best of your weight loss journey, it is important that you limit alcohol in your diet. You don’t have to cut it out completely, just limit its consumption.

  9.  Not sleeping enough

    Sleep is not only important in recovering your body, but it’s also a detrimental part in any weight loss journey.  You can read more about it here.

  10. Depending on supplements

    There is no magical weight loss pill out in the market. Yes, supplements and other formulas can help you get where you want to be, but it is a proper diet and exercise routine that will change your body!
